The MacArthur Foundation supports creative people and effective institutions committed to building a more just, verdant, and peaceful world. The MacArthur Foundation provided essential funding for our research and development efforts, including our redesign of a second generation of Solar Suitcase for maternity centers, and field testing these units in Nigeria. In 2013, the foundation supported our efforts to light up clinics in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan.
The Blum Center for Developing Economies (at UC Berkeley) links world-class faculty, inspiring new curriculum, and innovative technologies, services and business models to create real-world solutions for developing economies. It educates students, builds partnerships, and rigorously evaluates its innovations in order to create scalable and sustainable contributions toward the alleviation of poverty. We Care Solar is grateful to have received seed funding and ongoing support from the Blum Center.
The Starr International Foundation is a Swiss charitable foundation that is registered in the Canton of Zug. The Foundation is named after Cornelius Vander Starr, an American businessman who, in 1919, founded C.V. Starr & Co., and in 1943 Starr International Company (SICO), and subsequently other companies, some of which were later combined to form American International Group, Inc (AIG). Under the leadership of Mr. Starr’s successor, Maurice R. Greenberg, AIG grew to be one of the largest insurance and financial services companies in the world. The Starr International Foundation has received substantial contributions from the Starr International Charitable Trust, which was established by SICO. The Foundation supports a broad range of educational, environmental, artistic, cultural, medical, humanitarian and other charitable institutions in Switzerland and around the world, and began supporting We Care Solar in 2012.
UBS Optimus Foundation (UBSOF) supports the development, validation, promotion and dissemination of innovative approaches and ideas to improve the education, protection and health of disadvantaged children around the globe. UBSOF first supported our work in Liberia, where we have partnered with the World Health Organization and the Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research to bring Solar Suitcases to rural health clinics. UBSOF is now supporting our programs in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nepal and the Philippines and has been instrumental in support of development of version 3.0 of our Solar Suitcase.
Every Mother Counts is a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. EMC informs, engages, and mobilizes new audiences to take actions and raises funds that support maternal health programs around the world. EMC has supported our Solar programs in Malawi and Tanzania.
Global Health Foundation (GHF) envisions a world where all people have access to comprehensive healthcare services delivered by highly trained and compassionate medical professionals in well-equipped healthcare facilities. To achieve this vision, GHF supports innovative solutions to improve the health and livelihoods of people living in underserved communities around the world. GHF is supporting our work in Tanzania.
GreenLamp is a non-profit organization in Switzerland, dedicated to improving the lives of girls and women. GreenLamp has been working to improve maternal health care in Ethiopia in partnership with Hamlin College of Midwives. In addition to providing scholarships to midwives, GreenLamp has been partnering with We Care Solar and UBS Optimus Foundation to provide Solar Suitcases to more than 100 maternal health centers.
The Wells Fargo Environmental Grant program invests resources into communities – with a particular focus on projects that positively impact our environment. We are grateful that this program became a generous supporter of We Care Solar in 2012 and has now become an ardent supporter of our educational program called We Share Solar.
Music for Relief Foundation, a program of Linkin Park band. Comprised of musicians, music industry professionals, and fans, Music for Relief is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing aid to natural disaster survivors and protecting the environment. Their Power the World initiative supported our Solar Suitcase programs in Uganda and Tanzania.
The Trip Advisor Charitable Foundation supports programs designed to relieve the suffering of people around the world through education, health, human services, and international affairs. Trip Advisor was instrumental in their support of two Solar Suitcase programs – one in Malawi in 2013-14, and currently in Uganda and Tanzania.
The United Nations Foundation links the UN’s work with others around the world, mobilizing the energy and expertise of business and non-governmental organizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, global health, peace and security, women’s empowerment, poverty eradication, energy access, and U.S.-UN relations. The United Nations Foundation has been providing leadership through the Sustainable Energy for All initiative, and has provided support for We Care Solar Suitcase programs in Uganda in partnership with UNICEF and in Tanzania in partnership with Jhpiego.
The Gilead Foundation was established in 2005, and seeks to improve the health and well-being of underserved communities around the world. This foundation has provided generous grants to support a Solar Suitcase program in West Africa to support maternal health care in the wake of the Ebola epidemic.
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) works closely with governments and stakeholders to help countries around the world meet their economic, social and environmental goals. UNDESA recognized We Care Solar through its inaugural “Powering the Future We Want” award.
SunPower Corporation has supported our We Share Solar education program in California and deployment of our Solar Suitcases to schools in the Philippines.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company provided support of our We Share Solar program since 2015. Through PG&E, we have conducted teacher training workshops in California, and provided Solar Suitcase kits to thousands of high school students. These Solar Suitcases were then donated to schools and orphanages in Kenya.
The Segal Family Foundation creates “efficient investments and effective charitable solutions that improve life in sub-Saharan Africa.” This foundation has provided funding to help us build our organization and has supported Solar Suitcase initiatives in Malawi, Uganda, and other East African nations.
Clif Bar Family Foundation supports innovative small and mid-sized groups working to strengthen our food system and our communities, enhance public health, and safeguard our environment and natural resources. Since 2012, Clif Bar Family Foundation has supported our Women’s Solar Ambassador Program.
The Charitable Foundation of the Energy Bar Association CFEBA engages in a variety of energy-related and general charitable activities, and began supporting We Care Solar in 2013.
The Osprey Foundation strives to empower individuals and communities through education, health, economic opportunity and human rights in a sustainable way. They provided capacity building support in 2013 and 2014.
Big Ideas @ Berkeley marketplace lets alumni, corporate and foundation partners, friends, and family support Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students who are passionate about tackling major global, regional, and local challenges such as clean energy, the environment, public health, safe drinking water, public policy, and technology-based entrepreneurship. Big Ideas were the initial sponsors of We Care Solar and were instrumental in bringing attention to this project when it was in its infancy.
Everbright Solar, Inc. is a vertically integrated manufacturer and factory direct seller of Evergreen string ribbon solar cells, mono crystalline and multi crystalline solar cells. Charles Liu, CEO, has provided ongoing support for our work, proving low-cost solar panels for our installations around the world. Now we have partnered to create a new light weight solar panels specifically designed to fit inside our solar suitcase.
Solar Energy International (SEI) was founded in 1991 as a non-profit educational organization with the following mission: to empower people around the world through the education of sustainable practices. SEI has been a source of inspiration, and in the last two years has partnered with us to teach students and educators how to make our popular Solar Suitcase. SEI has also partnered with us to launch the We Care Solar Women’s Ambassador Program, providing training for women from around the world to lead trainings on the installation and maintenance of solar suitcases.
Ad Infininitum Films and Bilingual Communications is a leading production company and advertising firm specializing in bilingual media creation for multicultural audiences with a strong emphasis on the Latino population. Ad Infinitum donated the production of two stellar videos for WE CARE Solar, introducing our activities to a wide audience across the globe.
Black Diamond Equipment is a world renowned maker of high quality lighting products and has generously supported We Care Solar with headlamps for our Solar Suitcase.
