The MacArthur Foundation supports creative people and effective institutions committed to building a more just, verdant, and peaceful world. The MacArthur Foundation has generously provided essential funding for our research and development efforts, including our redesign of a second generation of Solar Suitcase for maternity centers, and field testing these units in Nigeria.
The Blum Center for Developing Economies (at UC Berkeley) links world-class faculty, inspiring new curriculum, and innovative technologies, services and business models to create real-world solutions for developing economies. It educates students, builds partnerships, and rigorously evaluates its innovations in order to create scalable and sustainable contributions toward the alleviation of poverty. WE CARE is grateful to have received seed funding and ongoing support from the Blum Center.
The Bixby Center for Population, Health, and Sustainability, located at UC Berkeley, is a collaboration of students, faculty, researchers, and staff working to address the critical impact of population on global public health and the environment. The Center is dedicated to developing innovations in reproductive health for resource-poor settings, including reliable health information systems and local access to essential technologies to help guide policy makers in prioritizing interventions to maximize health impact. The Bixby Center supported the original maternal health field research that identified the barriers to maternity care imposed by unreliable electricity.
STARR International Foundation
The Starr International Foundation is a Swiss charitable foundation that is registered in the Canton of Zug. The Foundation is named after Cornelius Vander Starr, an American businessman who, in 1919, founded C.V. Starr & Co., and in 1943 Starr International Company (SICO), and subsequently other companies, some of which were later combined to form American International Group, Inc (AIG). Under the leadership of Mr. Starr’s successor, Maurice R. Greenberg, AIG grew to be one of the largest insurance and financial services companies in the world. The Starr International Foundation has received substantial contributions from the Starr International Charitable Trust, which was established by SICO. The Foundation supports a broad range of educational, environmental, artistic, cultural, medical, humanitarian and other charitable institutions in Switzerland and around the world, and began supporting We Care Solar in 2012.
The Wells Fargo Environmental Grant program invests resources into communities – with a particular focus on projects that positively impact our environment. We are grateful that this program became a generous supporter of We Care Solar in 2012.
UBS Optimus Foundation (UBSOF) supports the development, validation, promotion and dissemination of innovative approaches and ideas to improve the education, protection and health of disadvantaged children around the globe. UBSOF has supported our work in Liberia, where we have partnered with the World Health Organization and the Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research to bring Solar Suitcases to rural health clinics and document its health impact in developing countries like Liberia.
Big Ideas @ Berkeley marketplace lets alumni, corporate and foundation partners, friends, and family support Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students who are passionate about tackling major global, regional, and local challenges such as clean energy, the environment, public health, safe drinking water, public policy, and technology-based entrepreneurship. Big Ideas were the initial sponsors of WE CARE and were instrumental in bringing attention to this project when it was in its infancy.
Everbright Solar, Inc. is a vertically integrated manufacturer and factory direct seller of Evergreen string ribbon solar cells, mono crystalline and multi crystalline solar cells. Charles Liu, CEO, has provided ongoing support for our work, proving low-cost solar panels for our installations around the world. Now we have partnered to create a new light weight solar panels specifically designed to fit inside our solar suitcase.
AllCell Technologies designs and manufactures lithium-ion battery packs for portable, stationary, and transportation applications. We are grateful to AllCell for working with us on a longer-lasting battery for us to use with remote clinics.

Solar Energy International (SEI) was founded in 1991 as a non-profit educational organization with the following mission: to empower people around the world through the education of sustainable practices. SEI has been a source of inspiration, and in the last two years has partnered with us to teach students and educators how to make our popular Solar Suitcase. SEI has also partnered with us to launch the We Care Solar Women’s Ambassador Program, providing training for women from around the world to lead trainings on the installation and maintenance of solar suitcases.
Inveneo provided guidance for our efforts since our inception, and provided fiscal sponsorship for WE CARE Solar before we obtained our 501.c.3 status. Inveneo’s mission is to get the tools of information communications technology (ICT), such as computers, telephony, and Internet access to those who need it most — people and organizations in rural and highly underserved communities of the developing world.
The Segal Family Foundation creates “efficient investments and effective charitable solutions that improve life in sub-Saharan Africa.” This foundation has provided funding to help us build our organization and has supported Solar Suitcase initiatives in Tanzania, Uganda, and other East African nations.

Ad Infinitum has donated the production of two stellar videos for WE CARE Solar, introducing our activities to a wide audience across the globe.
Applied Materials, Inc. is a global leader in providing innovative equipment, services and software to enable the manufacture of advanced semiconductor, flat panel display and solar photovoltaic products, and supported We Care Solar’s Sierra Leone program in early 2012 and our We Share Solar educational program.
MedShare is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the environment and healthcare through the efficient recovery and redistribution of surplus medical supplies and equipment to underserved healthcare facilities in developing countries. MedShare has provided generous aid to We Care Solar through donating medical equipment to support our Womens Ambassador Program.
